For older ladies living on a low income and in need of a safe and affordable home, Partis provides quality accommodation in beautiful and spacious grounds in Newbridge. The college was founded by Mrs Ann Partis, an enlightened Victorian benefactor, to help Christian gentlewomen in challenging personal circumstances. It's fair to say that life may have changed since the 1800s, but the need for support has not.

As a registered charity, we have picked up her baton and continue to offer almshouses to those who have faced difficulty, often through bereavement, divorce or retirement. The Partis of today has its roots firmly planted in its past - and its sights set firmly on the future. The overall ethos and spirit is as relevant now as it was all those years ago.

Welcome to Partis College, Almhouses Bath

Our founding story

Enlightened, compassionate and concerned - these qualities embody the life and work of Ann Partis, a staunch Victorian gentlewoman who was determined to make a difference to the lives of women left in 'reduced circumstances'.

In 1825 her ambition became reality and Partis College was founded - a term then used to refer to "like minded" or "similarly situated" people.

A collection of houses, complete with a chapel and gatekeepers lodge was built on land just outside the centre of Bath to provide respectable housing for ladies facing financial hardship and an uncertain future. This was often due to the death or desertion of a husband or other male relative upon whom they had been so dependent.

These ladies were the bereaved widows, daughters and unmarried sisters of clergymen, merchants, soldiers and other professions. There was then little real help to be had for women who were on their own and of modest means.

Partis proved to be a haven for distressed gentlewomen and a secure place to live amongst others in the same situation.

Nowadays Partis is home to women of diverse backgrounds and circumstances, who also share many things in common; a need for somewhere suitable and affordable to live independently, a mature age and Christian values.

History & Heritage

While most Victorian philanthropists sought to help the working class poor, Ann Partis broke the mould.  She was concerned about the fate of ladies who faced homelessness and poverty from another walk of life.

About Us

What we offer is special: A chance to make a new home in a beautiful setting in one of the few women-only almshouses in the UK.

There is also a communal vegetable garden, with a number of raised beds for keen gardeners to grow their own produce.

Residents are expected to provide their own furniture, including beds, table and chairs, and appliances.

  • For many, Partis offers the best of both worlds: independent living in your own house with the neighbourliness of a friendly and safe community close at hand.

A late Georgian Grade 1 Listed building, it’s a hidden gem in the World Heritage City of Bath. Thirty two handsome terraced houses, three apartments and a central chapel are set along three sides of a lawned quadrangle in spacious grounds with scenic views across the Avon Valley.

Mostly one-bedroomed, the houses are centrally heated, and have a sitting room, kitchen, bathroom, rear courtyard and garden. In a separate wing, a large common room and a fully equipped kitchen can be used by residents, along with a meeting room, two twin-bedded guest suites and laundry.

There are social events and activities for anyone wishing to join in.

Our location also makes life easy for getting out and about. Local shops and amenities, the Royal United Hospital and a GP surgery, are all within walking distance. And with a bus stop by the entrance, it’s a short journey to the city centre.

Personal Stories

  • “Quite simply, it was need that made me apply to live here. I was divorced in my late forties and had to rely on relatives for somewhere to live. I stayed with my daughter for 10 years until she had to move with her job. I was struggling financially and emotionally. It was a difficult time then but now I’ve never had it so good. I love living here.”

  • “When I was nearing retirement age I moved back to the UK after living in Australia. Our business had gone bust and I needed to make a decision about what to do for the best for me and my teenage children. I’d had a live-in job as a companion/driver for 10 years and accommodation was part of the package. When that ended I would have been living in a bedsit and penniless if it wasn’t for Partis.”

  • “I was forced to sell up when I got divorced. Then I retired and had money problems. It could have been a really terrible time in knowing where to go and what to do. I’d heard about Partis and the Christian aspect was important to me. Since I moved here 10 years ago, I value the friendship and company. Isolation can be a big problem for the elderly, but there’s no need to feel lonely here.”

  • “I was ready to open boxes, both in my life and literally. As a church army minister I’d worked all over the country. I’d lived in caravans, digs and bedsits and wasn’t wedded to bricks and mortar. But when I retired that changed. It was time to take stock. This has been my home more than anything I’ve ever had before.”

  • “I’d cared for my husband who had Alzheimer’s for a long time and when I was widowed quite recently, I became quite depressed and wondered what to do. I had a daughter who lived near Bath, but there was no possibility of me affording to live here. And then I found Partis. It’s like a new lease of life and I’m so happy here.”
